He'll I don't even like tequila, I won't be sipping everclear. That's just a bad idea. I like beer, wine and the occasional scotch but for me the days of liquor are over.

Good news. They told me that I would have to give the store warning when I was coming so they could get the Everclear in stock, but the store always seems to have it. You might not want to joke about drinking it when you get your interview. Aside from the obvious use in the shellac, I have found having clean alcohol around quite convenient. It's a good cleaner. I still use the denatured when I can clean things outside where the fumes don't matter (I take the spray gun out for it's final cleaning pass). It's a lot cheaper.

Thanks again for the tip. I never would have thought to apply for a permit in VA having never lived here before. The agent came out this morning and he was a pretty down to earth guy. It seemed like more of a paperwork process than anything once he saw my shop and asked a couple questions. I should be able to purchase clean alcohol at the ABC store here in town by next week. I'm shocked at how fast their process is, in NY or Alaska I would be waiting closer to months or years to get something like this done if at all. Factor in the gun laws to negate the hot and humid weather and I am starting to like Virginia!

You'll want Seal Coat, not the stuff
labeled shellac. The Zinnzer shellac is not de-waxed. The Zinnzer Seal Coat is.

The Zinnzer shellac sold in aerosol format IS dewaxed, unlike the regular cans. I suspect they needed to dewax the rattle-can product so it doesn't clog the nozzle.

I thought this was going to go in an entirely different direction pfft The version I wanted was someone coming in, taking your shellac from the fridge, and taking a long draw.

As others have said, one of the perks of mixing your own shellac is having a very fresh batch. Another is being able to explore the different tones of color various shellacs have. I just mixed up a batch of Kusmi button lac yesterday and can't wait until it finishes dissolving. But in many ways this is just another place we get to be the chef in our own kitchen, and while I may enjoy exploring some things, you'll enjoy exploring others and just getting something readymade.

You can de-wax shellac by filtering it through a drip coffee filter into a glass jar. I'm sure there are plenty of tutorials floating around the web you can google. On the flip-side, I used to use that spray can Bullseye to seal my rosette and binding channels, too, and saw the guys at Taylor doing the same thing in one of their behind the scenes videos.

I mix and dewax in bodum jars, and store it in these boston round bottles with some masking tape with the particulars (cut, date, and any treatments).
